MELBOURNE, Australia – Penn State senior Stephen Nedoroscik won the pommel horse title at the Melbourne World Cup on Saturday with a score of 15.4 in the finals at Melbourne Arena.
"Stephen sent serious notice today that he is not only a legitimate contender for an Olympic berth, but is a medal contender after his World Cup victory in Melbourne," Penn State head coach Randy Jepson said. "It is great to have a Nittany Lion making big waves on the international stage once again."
Nedoroscik earned points toward a berth in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with the title. In addition to his collegiate season, he now turns his attention to two more World Cup events. Unofficially, the two-time national champion will compete in Baku, Azerbaijan, on March 12-15, and in Doha, Qatar, on March 18-21.
Nedoroscik was in first coming out of the qualifying round with a 14.6 and then put together an outstanding routine for 15.4 in the finals. Saeedreza Keikha (Iran) was second with a 15.033, while Japan's Kohei Kameyama scored 14.833 for third.
The Penn State team has a key Big Ten meet coming up as it travels to take on Nebraska on Saturday, March 29, at 6 p.m. The meet will air live on the Big Ten Network. The Lions are 10-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
