Women's Hockey Ties Lindenwood

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – The Penn State women's hockey team knotted its eighth game of the season in a 1-1 draw with Lindenwood in College Hockey America action Friday evening at the Centene Community Ice Center.

Penn State (10-13-8, 5-7-5 CHA) had a first-period goal scored by freshman Rachel Weiss to take the initial lead.

Lindenwood (5-21-4, 3-13-1 CHA) tied the game six and half minutes into the third period and the scored remained deadlocked from there.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn State killed one Lindenwood power play early but that was followed by an even more unfortunate infraction when Abby Welch was called for a five-minute major for checking from behind with a disqualification at the 5:55 mark of the first period.

Penn State managed to keep Lindenwood off the scoreboard despite four penalties in the opening period and that defensive effort was rewarded with the game's first score late in the frame.

A long stretch pass from Rene Gangarosa to Rachel Weiss was right on the money and Weiss had a breakaway chance all alone and she deked the goaltender for her third goal of her freshman campaign. Mallory Uihlein picked up the secondary assist.

Chantal Burke did her part in the second period keeping Lindenwood scoreless on 12 shots faced. Meanwhile the Nittany Lions were unable to find the back of the net on their 14 shots on goal.

In the third period, Lindenwood tied the game up on Cierra Paisley's goal at the 6:22 mark. Penn State had two chances on the power play in the third period but couldn't come up with the go-ahead marker.

Neither team had a shot on goal in the overtime period.

GAME NOTES

  • Weiss' goal was her first since Nov. 1 at Robert Morris. She has five points (1G, 4A) in her last 11 games.
  • Chantal Burke's 30-save effort was her seventh game of 30 or more saves this season.
  • Penn State has 28 ties since the beginning of the 2017-18 season, the most in women's division one hockey over that span.
  • Penn State has now allowed two or less goals in 19 of its 31 games this season.
