CARY, N.C. – Penn State completed a four-game sweep of Princeton with a 4-3 victory Sunday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
The win extended Penn State's winning streak to six games and improved its record to 9-2, marking the Nittany Lions' best start since opening the 1980 season at 9-2.
Penn State used a three-run fourth inning to take command. Right fielder Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa.) tripled and scored on a base hit by shortstop Mac Hippenhammer (Fort Wayne, Ind.), and Hippenhammer later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Padilla (Wiley, Texas). Left fielder Ryan Ford (Freehold, N.J.) drove in a run with the bases loaded for a 3-1 lead.
Princeton (0-4) cut the deficit to one with a sacrifice fly by shortstop Jake Boone in the fifth inning, but Penn State restored its two-run advantage in the sixth as Gavin Homer (Battle Creek, Mich.) led the inning off with a double to the left gap and advanced to third on a base hit by Padilla, allowing Homer to score on a double play ball.
Princeton pulled within one again in the eighth inning on an RBI-double by right fielder David Harding, but RHP Jared Freilich (Worcester, Mass.) was able to get the Nittany Lions out of the inning and earn a four-out save.
RHP Logan Evans (2-0) earned the win in relief, preserving the lead in the fifth inning and allowing just a run on two hits with no walks and five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
Penn State will next embark on its spring break trip in the Baltimore area March 6-8, visiting Navy and UMBC Friday and Saturday, respectively, and then playing Fairleigh Dickinson at Navy Sunday. The trip concludes in Ohio at Miami Thursday-Saturday, Mar. 12-14.
