Nittany Lions Battle Tough Field at General Hackler

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Penn State men's golf team battled a tough field at the General Hackler Championship and finished the first day in 13th place with a 591 (15-over). Junior Lukas Clark (Holland, Pa.) was the only Nittany Lion under par in the first round with a 1-under 71 and went 1-over in the afternoon. He is tied for 19th among individuals with a 144 (E) on Monday.
 
Penn State will tee off beginning at 8:50 a.m. ET Tuesday on No. 10 at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
 
Senior Alec Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) moved up 17 spots in the standings to tie for 44th in the afternoon round with a 71 and first-day 148 (4-over). Bard spread out four birdies, two on his first nine to go 1-under and two on his last nine to maintain his score. Senior Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) went an even 72 in the first round with four birdies, but lost some ground in the standings in the second round with a 5-over 77 for a tie for 48th and a 149 (5-over).
 
Freshman Patrick Sheehan (Doylestown, Pa.) had five birdies on the day, two in the first round as he registered a 4-over 76. Two birdies on his first nine of the second round helped Sheehan hold on to a 1-over score and he added another birdie on the par-5 No. 8 for a 77 (5-over) and 153 (9-over) final for a tie for 70th. Junior Lou Olsakovsky (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) tied for 72nd, following his 2-over 74 in the first round with a tough 80 in the afternoon for a 154 total (10-over).
 
North Carolina took control after the first round with an 8-under 280 and recorded a 4-under 284 in the second round for a 584 (12-under) total. Chanticleer Zack Taylor holds the individual top spot after he fired a first-round low 66 and tied for the second-round low with a 68 to go 10-under for the day.
