MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Penn State men's golf team moved up three spots on the final day of competition at the General Hackler Championship to finish in 10th with an 18-over 882. The Nittany Lions went six-under on their second nine and recorded their best round on Tuesday with a 291.
"We started on the back nine today which was loaded with very difficult hole locations," said Penn State men's golf coach Greg Nye. "It was a bumpy start, but the team worked its way through the turn without losing more ground, made two great birdies on the difficult second hole, and spent the rest of the final nine playing as well as we have played all year."
Senior Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) made the biggest move on the final day, 21 spots, into a tie for 21st with a 1-over 217 total (72-77-68). Davis carded a 4-under 68 with an eagle on No. 8 and five birdies in his final round.
A jump up eight spots for Alec Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) landed the senior in a tie for 36th with a 1-over 73 and 221 (5-over) final. Playing even on his final eight holes, junior Lukas Clark finished in a tie for 44th with a 222 (6-over) total.
Junior Lou Olsakovsky (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) scattered four birdies in his final round and matched his first-round 74 score to move up into a tie for 67th with a 12-over 228. Freshman Patrick Sheehan (Doylestown, Pa.) added two birdies on his final nine holes for a 4-over 76 in the final round. His 229 (13-over, 76-77-76) put him in a tie for 69th.
North Carolina won the team championship with a 21-under 843 after leading the event from start to finish. Coastal Carolina's Zack Taylor won the individual crown with a 208 (8-under).
The Nittany Lions continue their travels during spring break in Georgia. They will compete next at the Linger Longer Collegiate Invitational Friday-Sunday, March 20-22 at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Georgia.
