Fencing set to begin Regionals in Durham

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- This Saturday, March 7th, the men's and women's fencing teams will begin their postseason in Durham, N.C. at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals. The event will be hosted by Duke University and will be held at Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
 
The Nittany Lions will go to bout against fencers from Duke, Drew, Haverford, Johns Hopkins, Lafayette, New Jersey Technical Institute, North Carolina, Penn, Princeton, Stevens, Temple, and Wagner.
 
Foil and epee action will start at 9 a.m. followed by men's saber at 10 a.m. and women's saber at 11 a.m.
 
Fencing this weekend for the men are:
 
Foil - Sebastiano Bicego (Vicenza, Italy), Shane Iverson (Basking Ridge, N.J.), Andrey Ostatnigrosh (Fresno, Calif.), and Felipe Rosario (Maplewood, N.J.).
 
Epee - Elias Cole (Chappaqua, N.Y.), Ryan Griffiths (Fair Lawn, N.J.), Jonathan Piskovatskov (Houston, Texas), and Devin Tafoya (Highlands Ranch, Colo.).
 
Saber - Michal Wisniowski (Clark, N.J.), Inti Farfan-Bayerl (Morrison, Colo.), Ethan Mullennix (San Francisco, Calif.), and Chase Pflueger (Highlands Ranch, Colo.).
 
Fencing this weekend for the women are:
 
Foil - Lodovica Bicego (Vicenza, Italy), Sofia McGoff-Medero (Gurabo, Puerto Rico), Jade Rowland (Princeton Junction, N.J.), and Isabella Zuzulo (Newtown, Pa.).
 
Epee - Axelle Wasiak (Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium) and Barbara VanBenthuysen (Spring, Texas).
 
Saber - Pauline Conscience (Paris, France), Sara Cunningham (Dectur, Ga.), Zara Moss (Cranberry Township, Pa.), and Kelli Wozniak (Westerville, Ohio).
 
The qualification process for the NCAA Championship will be based off of a combination of the fencers' season record and this Saturday's results. The fencers' season statistics will count toward 40 percent of qualification, with the final 60 percent coming from the fencers' performance this weekend. NCAA Championship selections will be announced on Tuesday, March 10th. 
 
Following this Saturday's action, select Penn State fencers will travel to Anaheim, Calif. For the Men's and Women's Grand Prix that starts Friday, March 13th, and ends on Sunday, March 15th.
