UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's basketball associate head coach Keith Urgo has been recognized as one of the nation's top assistant coaches by Silver Waves Media. The college sports website surveyed university and college administrators, search firms and other influencers to compile its 2020 list.
"Keith hasn't received enough of the credit he deserves for what he does for this program and this honor is a start," said Nittany Lion basketball coach Patrick Chambers. "From helping build our culture from the very beginning to what we have accomplished over the past few seasons, that is all possible because of his hard work on the recruiting trail and on the court."
Penn State posted 21 overall wins and 11 Big Ten Conference wins in 2019-20, totals that included eight-straight Big Ten wins to set the program's record for its longest conference win streak. Consecutive victories over four ranked teams during the course of the 2019-20 season set another record as the Nittany Lions were positioned for an NCAA Tournament berth.
With 76 wins over the last four seasons, the Nittany Lion seniors became Penn State's winningest class, which included the 2018 National Invitation Tournament championship and 12 wins over ranked teams during that timeframe.
Urgo joined Chambers' staff in 2011 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2013. At the forefront of Penn State's recruiting efforts, Urgo has identified prospects, brought them into the Nittany Lion program and helped further their development on the court. In fall 2018, ESPN tabbed Chambers and Penn State No. 7 nationally for their ability to develop talent.
