COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Penn State men's swimming & diving team fell to the 18th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes, 163.5 - 134.5, Saturday at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio. This was the team's first official meet of the 2020-21 season following two inter-squad competitions in November.
Despite the loss, the Nittany Lions ended their opening meet with eight individual wins and first in both the 200 medley and 400 free relays.
Top Swims
Junior Michael Daly finished the day with two wins in the 100 (47.24) and 200 back (1:44.04). His time in the 100 back becomes the sixth-fastest in program history in the event.
Behind Daly, sophomore Lachlan Byrne secured third in the 200 back with a time of 1:49.53.
Sophomore Daniel Raisanen, who holds the school record in the 200 breast, took home first in the event (1:58.89) and second in the 100 breast (54.80). Junior William Lulek followed Raisanen with a third-place finish in the 200 breast (2:01.51)
Juniors Zac Zwijacz and Carlos Vasquez had a one-two sweep in the 200 fly. Zwijacz won with a time of 1:47.42 and Vasquez was right behind him with a second-place finish (1:50.97).
Two Nittany Lions placed first in the 100 fly after both Zwijacz and standout freshman Jake Houck touched at the same time in the race (48.15). Senior Jacob Deckman finished right after them to secure third in the event (49.30).
Senior William Roberson ended the meet with a pair of wins in the 50 free (19.85) and 100 free (44.62). Following closely behind him in the 50 free was Houck who swam 19.92 for second-place.
Senior Hayden Harlow also earned points for the team with a win in the 200 IM (1:49.96).
Top Dives
On the boards, senior Bryce Hoch represented the Nittany Lions on the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. His score of 340.28 in the 3-meter qualifies him for NCAA Zones.
Nittany Lion Relays
The Nittany Lions started out with a win this afternoon in the 200 medley relay. The team consisting of Roberson, Raisanen, Zwijacz, and Houck finished with a time of 1:27.68.
The 400 free relay team of Houck, Daly, Roberson, and Zwijacz concluded the meet with a win in the event (2:58.51).
