Iowa Pulls Away Late for Win over Penn State

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Penn State women's basketball team tied the program's single-game record with 14 made three-pointers, but Iowa shot the lights out in the second half to claim a 96-78 victory in Big Ten action at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Thursday afternoon.

Ten of Penn State's 14 three-pointers came in the first half, but the tale of two halves was the opposite in the second as it was Iowa who went off for 11 treys in the term to come back for the victory.

Freshman Maddie Burke led Penn State with 20 points behind six made three-pointers, while also adding eight rebounds. Sophomore Anna Camden finished with a career-best 18 points in addition to her seven rebounds. Senior Niya Beverley and sophomore Shay Hagans added 13 points apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State got off to a hot start, racing out to an 11-2 lead just 2:33 into the game thanks to baskets from four different Lady Lions that forced an Iowa timeout. The Hawkeyes clawed within two at 13-11, but three-pointers from Burke and Nan Garcia and jumpers from Camden and Johnasia Cash helped PSU score 10 of the final 16 points of the first quarter to take a 23-17 advantage.
  • Penn State's three-point barrage took over the second quarter as the Lady Lions shot 7-for-13 (53.8 percent) from deep in just the second term alone. Burke made four of those three-pointers, while Hagans added two and Camden drilled one. Penn State responded to Iowa pulling within five at 31-26 at 6:59 with an 8-0 stretch that would lead the Lady Lions on their way to a 52-41 halftime lead.
  • Penn State picked up where it left off in the second half as Hagans and Beverley both hit three-pointers in the first 2:15 of the half. But Iowa got its offense rolling for the remainder of the third quarter as the Hawkeyes shot 66.7 percent from the field in the term to storm back and take a slim 69-67 lead into the fourth quarter.
  • The shots weren't falling for the Lady Lions in the fourth quarter and the nation's second-leading scorer in Iowa's Caitlin Clark took over with 17 points in the fourth term as Iowa pulled away for the victory.
