COLUMBUS, Ohio. – The Penn State women's soccer team and the Ohio State Buckeyes finished Saturday's contest in a 2-2 draw. The Nittany Lions (4-1-1, 4-1-1) netted two goals in the second half to draw even with the Buckeyes.
Sam Coffey eclipsed the 100-point mark in her career with her fourth goal of the season in the 49th minute. Coffey now has 101 points and is the NCAA Division I active leader in points and assists.
With the 2-2 tie, it marked the first time since October 20, 2017 the Nittany Lions have tied in a Big Ten regular season contest. That match was a 2-2 draw against Purdue at Jeffrey Field.
How It Happened
- Ohio State struck first, scoring in just the third minute of action as Kayla Fisher scored her first goal of the season to grab a 1-0 lead.
- The Nittany Lion offense turned up the offensive intensity following the early goal. The Nittany Lions registered eight shots in the first half and six shots on goal. The Buckeyes defense however didn't allow for uncontested shots and forced several of these shots from outside the Ohio State box.
- Ohio State's only shot on goal in the first half was the goal in the third minute as the Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead into the half.
- In the 49th minute, Sam Coffey tied the game at 1-1 with her fourth goal of the season. Rachel Wasserman sent a long ball up the left side of the field that found a streaking Coffey. Coffey muscled passed her defender and used her left foot to best the Ohio State keeper.
- The Buckeyes retook the lead in the 65th minute as Fischer scored her second goal of the game to give Ohio State a 2-1 lead.
- Less than three minutes later, Frankie Tagliaferri sent a shot on net that was redirected off a Buckeye defender and found the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.
- After the goal for the Buckeyes in the 65th minute, Kat Asman made four saves in the second half. This included a save in the 87th minute to keep the game knotted at 2-2 heading into extra time.
- In the first overtime period, Coffey sent a blast that was just over the crossbar in the 93rd minute. Less than a minute later, Coffey sent another shot on net that was saved by the Buckeyes keeper.
- The game would need a final 10-minute overtime period after the score still read 2-2 after 100 minutes of play. Ohio State would take three shots in the second overtime, but the Nittany Lions defense held firm and did not allow for an easy look.
- Neither team could gain the advantage and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Nittany Lions return home for a pair of contests next week against Minnesota and Michigan.
