#11 Penn State Tops Michigan 4-1

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State women's soccer team (6-1-1, 6-1-1) topped the Michigan Wolverines (4-2-2, 4-2-2) 4-1 to win the second-straight game at Jeffrey Field this week.

Payton Linnehan netted two goals in the win and Ally Schlegel scored her second game-winner of the year in the victory.

How It Happened

  • Michigan took the early lead on a goal in the 12th minute. Sarah Stratigakis found Lily Farkas and Farkas found the back of the net to grab the 1-0 lead for the Wolverines.
  • Just 32 seconds later, Ally Schlegel drew a foul in the box to give the Nittany Lions a penalty kick. Captain Sam Coffey drilled her PK to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Nittany Lions used the penalty kick goal to swing the momentum in their favor. In the 21st minute, Coffey carried the ball into the left side of the box and sent a swinging ball in front of the net. A sliding Schlegel got her right foot on the ball and found the net to give Penn State a 2-1 lead.
  • In the 30th minute, the Nittany Lions extended their lead to 3-1 as Payton Linnehan scored her second goal of the season. Coffey assisted on Linnehan goal as well, sending a long pass behind the Michigan defense to give Linnehan a breakaway. She buried her shot beyond the outstretched hands of the Wolverine goalkeeper.
  • The Nittany Lions took a 3-1 lead at the half.
  • Linnehan scored her second goal of the game in the 64th minute and extended the Penn State lead to 4-1.
  • Katherine Asman had the best performance of her Penn State career during Sunday's win. Asman made seven saves in the second half to secure the win for the Nittany Lions.
  • Penn State is back in action on Thursday on the road against Iowa and continues its road trip against Nebraska on Sunday, March 28.
