UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State baseball team (8-16, 8-16) fell 5-3 in the series finale to Nebraska on Sunday morning. The Huskers are currently atop the Big Ten standings with an 18-6 record.
Penn State heads to Ohio State next weekend for a three-game stint.
How it Happened
- Starter Kyle Virbitsky anchored down after allowing two baserunners in the top of the first. Virbitsky got the next two hitters on a strikeout and a flyout.
- Penn State looked to take the lead in the bottom of the frame. Tayven Kelley tripled to right center with one out in the inning. A strike out and a ground out ended the Nittany Lions threat.
- Nebraska struck first in the top of the third. A leadoff double and a fly out to right advanced the runner to third. A one-out single scored the runner from third and Nebraska took a 1-0 lead.
- The Nittany Lions got the run back in the bottom of the third. Jay Harry and Gavin Homer both singled with one out and Kelley reached on an error to load the bases. A fielder choice erased Harry as he was forced out at the plate. A wild pitch scored Homer from third to tie the game at 1-1.
- Two errors in the top of the fourth allowed for the go-ahead run to score and the Huskers led 2-1 after four full innings.
- Three runs and an error resulted in two more runs for the Huskers in the top of the fifth.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Cole Bartels reached on a bunt single with an out in the inning. Bartels would advance to second on a wild pitch during the next batter. With two outs in the frame, Gavin Homer doubled down the left field line to cut the deficit to 4-2.
- Tyler Shingledecker relieved Virbitsky in the sixth inning. A run would score in the sixth, but it was the only run Shingledecker surrendered in his four-inning performance.
- The Nittany Lions scored another run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 5-3.
- After Shingledecker surrendered his run in the sixth, he retired nine straight Huskers.
- Penn State could not bring the deficit any closer and fell 5-3 in the final game.
Notes
Justin Williams and Gavin Homer continued their reached base streak to 18 and 14 games respectively. Williams is currently on a five-game hitting streak.
