UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Nittany Lion field hockey player Sophia Gladieux (Boyertown, Pa.) has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the week ending April 18, 2021. Gladieux's Big Ten honor is the fourth of the season for Penn State and the second Freshman of the Week award for the Lion rookie.
Gladieux continued her impressive rookie campaign, scoring goals in both games for Penn State as the Nittany Lions clinched the No. 2 seed at the Big Ten Tournament this coming weekend. Gladieux notched a goal in Penn State's 2-1 victory over visiting Ohio State on Friday, the game that secured Penn State's 5-2 conference mark and the second-seed.
The next day, Gladieux scored an unassisted goal and had an assists in a tough 3-2 overtime loss to the Buckeyes. Gladieux leads Penn State with 24 points off a team-best 11 goals and two assists.
Penn State closed out the regular season with a 7-6 mark, 5-2 in the Big Ten. Ohio State ends its regulars season 5-8, 2-5 in the conference standings. The Nittany Lions now prepare for the Big Ten Tournament beginning this week at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Penn State will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will take on, for the third straight game, Ohio State, the No. 7 seed. Game time in Iowa city is set for 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21. The game airs live nationally on the Big Ten Network.
