BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Penn State track & field team kicked-off the first of two meets this weekend when the team competed at the Big Ten Indiana Invite on Friday.
With most of the squad set to compete on Saturday at Rutgers, Friday saw several of the team's distance runners in action. Despite several weather delays, the teams were able to complete the meet late into the night.
Senior Danae Rivers posted her best 1500 time of the season thus far, recording a 4:14.21 in a second place finish. Rivers was the top finisher among collegiate athletes in the race. Teammate Allison Willingmyre recorded a solid 10:33.01 to place fourth in the women's 3000m steeplechase. In the men's 1500, sophomore Evan Dorenkamp led the way for the Nittany Lions with a PR of 3:47.36 to place seventh. In his first appearance in the 1500, William Ashenfelter placed 14th with a strong 3:49.89 time.
True freshman Behailu Bekele-Arcuri was strong in the men's 5k, posting a personal best 14:31.40 to place second.
The night was capped off on a high note, as senior Kathryn Munks claimed the victory in the women's 10k with a time of 33:59.20 and Alex Tomasko finishing second in the men's 10k with a 30:27.69. Munks' time currently ranks fourth in the East Region.
Competition on Saturday at Rutgers is slated to begin at 1:15 p.m. with the women's javelin. The first track event will begin shortly after with the 3000m steeplechase scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
