UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State junior opposite hitter Cal Fisher was named the Off the Block National Server of the Year for the 2021 season as announced Wednesday afternoon.
The award, which spans both the National Collegiate and Division III levels of men's volleyball, was voted on by a nationwide voting committee of 25 coaches and media members and featuring three finalists and a selected winner being student-athlete with the most votes received.
Fisher received the most votes among the three finalists, which also included Camden Gianni of Grand Canyon and Gabi Garcia Fernandez of BYU.
Fisher completed his 2021 All-America season with nation-best 60 service aces for a 0.750 aces per set rate. Fisher's service-ace total ranks fourth in Penn State single-season history behind Penn State greats and USA Olympians Max Holt (79, 2009) and Aaron Russell (71, 2014; 62, 2015).
The Pittsburgh, Pa. native also moved into in the top 10 on the Nittany Lions career service ace charts this season with his 95 aces since the 2019 season.
Featuring a devastating left-handed hook serve, Fisher put the Nittany Lions on multiple scoring runs in the 2021 beginning with his opening volley. His seven service aces Feb. 13 in a 3-1 over NJIT was tied for the second-most aces in a match of any length this season nationwide.
Fisher was named an AVCA Second-Team All-American for the first time in his career after being honored on the All-EIVA First Team for the second time. Fisher also was named the 2021 EIVA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
