UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Former Penn State great Haleigh Washington had a big match while helping USA Women's Volleyball improve to 3-0 at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a 3-2 (25-19, 25-20, 17-25, 20-25, 15-12) win over Turkey on Thursday morning.
USA picked up two points with the five-set win, giving them eight through three matches in Pool B. They are one of two unbeaten teams in Pool B, sitting behind Italy, which leads with a 3-0 record and nine points. A team earns three points for a sweep or a four-set win, two points for a five-set win, and one point for a five-set loss.
Washington totaled 13 points on seven kills, five blocks and one ace. She led the team in blocks and was third in kills. The middle blocker came through in the clutch with three blocks in the clinching set.
Team USA secured a spot in the eight-team bracket following pool play with the win. It has matches remaining against the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) team on Friday at 10:05 p.m. (ET), and Italy on Sunday at 10:05 p.m. (ET). The match against ROC will air live on CNBC and stream on NBCOlympics.com.
Washington is joined on Team USA by another former Penn State legend and teammate, Micha Hancock. Hancock was a three-time All-American for the Nittany Lions and won back-to-back national titles in 2013 and 2014. Washington also earned three All-America honors and joined Hancock on the 2014 title-winning team.
