Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State Golf Tournament Set for Aug. 27

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The 24th-annual Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State Golf Tournament, hosted by Nittany Lion basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry, will be held Friday, August 27, at the Penn State Golf Courses. Through this golf tournament, as well as other annual events and partnerships, Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State raises funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society to support cancer research and mission programs in our local community.

The Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Tournament, presented by local sponsor PSECU, has become one of the premier golf events in Pennsylvania, welcoming over 300 golfers, sponsors and regional sports luminaries to the Penn State Golf Courses. The deadline to register a team for the 2021 Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Tournament is Friday, Aug. 13.

The tournament returns for the first time since 2019 as the 2020 tournament was forced to be canceled by the Covid-19 pandemic. CvC and the Penn State Golf Courses have taken the necessary precautions to create a safe environment for guests, volunteers and staff in the planning of the 24th-annual tournament.

The four-player, 18-hole shot gun start, scramble tournament is just one of the activities held Thursday-Friday, Aug. 26-27. On Aug. 26, the night before the golf tournament, CvC hosts a Sponsors Reception at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, featuring heavy hors d'oeuvres, open beverage service, contests and live music. An online auction, to be launched Friday, Aug. 20, will feature a number of exclusive items and experiences with all proceeds benefiting CvC-Penn State.

The Penn State chapter of Coaches vs. Cancer was established in 1995 by former Nittany Lion head coach Bruce Parkhill who grew up and attended high school in State College. Penn State basketball coaches since have carried on the mission. Since the organization's launch, the CvC-Penn State chapter has raised more than $3.4 million net to date and is among nation's most successful fundraising chapters.

The golf tournament hosted by CvC-Penn State was initiated by Jerry Dunn during his tenure in University Park with the first tournament held in 1997. It has raised over $1.8 million to date, with Parkhill and Dunn competing in it nearly every year.

Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State hosts activities throughout the year, including the upcoming Coach's Challenge.  Individuals can get involved with the Coaches vs. Cancer of Penn State chapter by becoming a sponsor, donating, or volunteering.
