Hancock, Washington to Play for Women's Volleyball Gold at Tokyo Olympics

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The U.S. women's volleyball team, which includes former Penn State legends Micha Hancock and Haleigh Washington, are headed to the gold medal match at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after beating Serbia 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-23) on Friday.

Washington totaled five kills, two digs, one block and one ace in the sweep of Serbia. She helped USA avenge a loss to Serbia in the semifinal round of the 2016 Olympics.

Hancock played a pivotal role in USA getting to the semifinal round to play Serbia. She started at setter in the team's dominant 3-0 win over Dominican Republic in the quarterfinal round and finished with 37 assists, six digs, one block, one kill and one ace.

The gold medal match featuring USA and Brazil is set for Sunday at 12:30 a.m. It will air live on USA Network.

USA is 6-1 at the Tokyo Olympics. That includes wins over Argentina, China, Turkey and Italy in pool play, and victories over Dominican Republic and Serbia in bracket competition.

Brazil is unbeaten at 7-0 with a perfect 5-0 record in pool play before beating the Russian Olympic Committee in the quarterfinals and Korea in the semifinals.

Team USA has never won gold in women's volleyball at the Olympics. It has medaled five times with three silvers and two bronze medals.

Hancock was a three-time All-American for Penn State and won back-to-back national titles with the Nittany Lions in 2013 and 2014. Washington also earned three All-America honors and joined Hancock on the 2014 title-winning team.
