VERONA, N.Y. – The Penn State men's golf team sits in third place with a 2-under, 574 team total after the opening two rounds of the 15-team Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate concluded Sunday evening. Nittany Lion junior Patrick Sheehan and freshman Morgan Lofland are both in the top 10 through the first two rounds, while Lofland hit the biggest shot of the day with a hole-in-one during the second round.
Sheehan was a steady force throughout the day, firing a 2-under, 70, in each of the first two rounds to put him in seventh place amongst all individuals. He carded 10 birdies, five in each round.
Lofland is tied for eighth after the first two rounds of his collegiate debut. The freshman shot 2-over, 74, in the opening round before turning it up a notch with a team-low 5-under, 67, in the afternoon round. Lofland started the round on hole 12, shooting par on 12, 13, and 14 before hitting the biggest shot of his collegiate debut – a hole-in-one on 15. He followed the hole-in-one with four birdies to finish the round at 5-under.
Graduate student Lou Olsakovsky sits tied for 21st heading into Monday's final round at 2-over, 146. Olsakovsky shot a 1-under, 71, in the opening round before carding a 3-over, 75, in the second round.
Junior Ben Smith is tied for 26th at 4-over, 148. Smith had a two-stroke improvement in his second round, firing a 1-over, 73, with three birdies.
Freshman Jake Griffin finished the day tied for 31st at 5-over, 149. He shot a 2-over, 74, in the opening round and a 3-over, 75, in the second round.
Junior Jimmy Meyers, playing as an individual, is tied for 18th after the first day of competition with 1-over, 145. Meyers finished 1-under, 71, in the first round before carding a 2-over, 74, in the afternoon.
LSU leads the field with a 22-under, 554, through the first two rounds. Host Missouri sits in second place at 11-under, 565, while third-place Penn State (2-under, 574) and fourth-place Duke (1-under, 575) are separated by just one stroke.
The final round of the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate at Turning Stone Resort's par-72, 6,803-yard Kaluhyat Course takes place tomorrow with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Live stats and results are available on GolfStat.
