Women’s Swimming & Diving Earns Road Win Against West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Penn State Women's Swimming and Diving team won against West Virginia in their second meet of the season. Seniors Madison Murtagh and Marie Schobel led the team to a 181-107 victory, each winning 2 individual events. The Nittany Lions swept the 50 free and, for the second time in two weeks, the backstroke events. 

Top Swims

Murtagh won the 200 free (1:51.84) and the 500 free (4:57.21). In the 200, sophomore Cat Stanford won a close battle for second, in 1:52.87. 

Stanford also won the 100 free in 51.37. 

Schobel led the team in sweeping the backstroke events. She won the 100 in 55.09 as Emma Harvey and Molly Carson followed her in second (55.77) and third (56.62) respectively. Schobel won the 200 in 2:00.32. Carson finished second (2:03.32) and Harvey placed third (2:04.63). 

Together, senior Olivia Jack and sophomore Kylie Rydland won both breaststroke events for the Nittany Lions. Jack won the 100 in 1:04.63 while Rydland finished second (1:06.98). Later in the meet, Rydland won the 200 in 2:22.76 as Jack placed second (2:23.28). 

Junior Abigail Amdor won the 50 free in 23.63. She led Penn State to a top-four sweep in the event as graduate student Maddie Cooke placed second (23.66), followed by sophomore Mary Brinker in third (24.12) and Marly Lough in fourth (24.22). 

Morgan Rinn won the 200 fly in 2:03.61 and finished second in the 1000 free (10.30.43). 

The Nittany Lions competed in exhibitions in both the 100 fly and 200 IM. Freshman Maura Fleuhr impressed as Penn State's top finisher in the 100 fly with a time of 56.41 while in the 200 IM, Lough had PSU's quickest time (2:05.75). 

Top Dives 

On the boards, Penn State swept the women's 3-meter dive. Senior Sierra Shurts led the team in winning the event with a score of 265.43. Tatum Evans finished second (258.98) and Wei Wei placed third (250.20). Shurts also earned a second place finish in the 1-meter dive with 257.40. 

Nittany Lions Relays

Penn State began the meet by sweeping the 400 medley relay. The team of Schobel, Cooke, Fluehr and Stanford finished first in 3:44.19. Carson, Jack, Harvey and Amdor  came home for second (3:47.65) and Loughlin, Ryland, Ledwith and Sheridan followed them to third (3:52.76). 

Penn State competed in exhibitions in the 200 Free relay. The Nittany Lions' top relay team was Cooke, Amdor, Stanford and Fluehr, who finished in 1:34.23.

Next Up 

After a week away from competition, the women's team heads to Liberty on Friday, October 29 and Saturday, October 30. It will be their third meet of the season and second consecutive on the road.
