Penn State Hosts No. 7 Maryland in Final Regular-Season Home Match Tuesday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's soccer team, under fourth-year head coach Jeff Cook, will look to get back in the win column when it welcomes a tough Big Ten opponent in No. 7 Maryland to Jeffrey Field on Tuesday, Oct. 26. The final regular-season home match is slated for an 8 p.m. kickoff live on Big Ten Network with Chris Vosters (pxp) and Tim Lenahan (analyst) on the call.

Parking Information
Parking for all Penn State Athletics' non-football events will require a valid permit or payment of the applicable parking fee for campus lots. Fans with valid Penn State University Park parking permits will be permitted to park at non-football athletics events for free, following Transportation Services parking policies and access.
 
For men's soccer matches, fans are asked to park in the Jordan East, Stadium West or Porter North lots. Fans without a permit are encouraged to prepay for event parking at a discounted rate of $5.50 through ParkMobile - https://psu.parkmobile.io/. Prepayment is available through 11:59 p.m. the day prior to each event. Event day parking will be $10 per vehicle and is cash only/can be purchased on the ParkMobile app. The East Deck is also available for most events for $1 per hour.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State attempted to front a comeback on the road at Ohio State after going down by two goals early, but the effort would come up just short, 2-1, Friday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
  • Ohio State struck first in the seventh minute off a corner kick to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • After continuing to maintain possession, the Buckeyes made it 2-0 on another set piece, this time a free kick outside the 18, in the 17th minute.
  • The Nittany Lions had their offensive chances with a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks in the first half, but would ultimately find themselves in a two-goal hole at the break.
  • Redshirt senior Brandon Hackenberg had the first chance at net for Penn State in the second half with a header shot off a free kick in the 53rd minute, but Ohio State keeper Noah Lawrence would push it just over the crossbar to keep the Nittany Lions out of the back of the net.
  • Penn State finally got on the scoreboard in the 67th minute thanks to a set piece of its own as senior Seth Kuhn originally had a great look at net that was saved to set up a corner kick. Kuhn then took the corner and placed a perfect ball into the box to find the head of junior Andrew Privett for the score to make it a one-goal game.
  • The Nittany Lions would do their best to find the equalizer in the remaining 20 or so minutes, getting the ball into the offensive zone and taking four more good looks at net, including one on frame in the last 30 seconds, but ultimately would come up short.
  • Junior goalkeeper Kris Shakes did all he could to keep his team in the game, making a season-high seven saves, including five in the second half alone.

PRIVETT IN FORM

  • Junior midfielder Andrew Privett is really having a break-out year in 2021, currently leading the team in points with 15 on six goals and three assists.
  • His total goals and points are tied for first in the Big Ten and both rank top-90 nationally.
  • The Fallson, Md., native's six goals is a career high as is his 15 total points, surpassing his previous best of two goals and seven points as a freshman in 2019.

KUHN IN THE MIDDLE

  • Senior vice captain Seth Kuhn has proven to be an integral piece in Penn State's play, especially on the offensive end creating scoring chances as a central midfielder.
  • Kuhn paces the team with six assists which is second in the Big Ten and 43rd nationally.
  • The Wyomissing, Pa., native set a career high with his sixth assist of the season at Ohio State (10/22), passing his previous of five from his first season in the Blue and White in 2019.
  • Kuhn's 17 career assists is 33rd on the NCAA active career leaders list. 

SCOUTING MARYLAND

  • Maryland is led by 29-year head coach Sasho Cirovski and is 11-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in Big Ten play. The seventh-ranked Terrapins are riding a four-game win streak, most recently picking up a 3-1 conference road victory at Michigan State on Friday (10/22).
  • Sophomore midfielder Ben Bender paces the Terrapins with 14 points on a team-high five goals and four assists. Classmate Jacen Russell-Rowe also has four assists to co-lead the team in that category. In all, 17 different Maryland players have recorded at least one point this season.
  • In net, junior goalkeeper Niklas Neumann has played a majority of the time with 10 starts and 11 games played. He holds a 0.85 goals-against average and a 0.727 save percentage with 24 saves. Neumann has three shutouts this season and one combined.

PENN STATE AGAINST MARYLAND

  • Penn State trails Maryland 19-25-6 in the all-time series, but is on a three-game unbeaten streak against the Terrapins (W – 10/29/19; W – 2/19/21; T – 3/31/21).
  • Last season, Penn State and Maryland met twice during the regular season in a home-and-home. The Nittany Lions held on for a 3-2 victory inside Holuba Hall in the postponed season opener. They then played the Terrapins to a 2-2 double-overtime draw, finding the equalizer twice in the pouring rain in College Park at the end of the regular season.
  • The Nittany Lions and Terrapins have played overtime games in three of the last four matchups.
