Women's Soccer Falls to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Penn State women's soccer team fell in conference play to Minnesota 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. Riley Gleason scored her first career goal in the 89th minute of play for Penn State.
 
How it Happened
 
The Nittany Lions looked to gain the early advantage in the fourth minute as Ally Schlegel got behind the Gophers back line. Schlegel was ruled offsides prior to her being able to attempt a shot on the Gophers' keeper.
 
The match saw just one shot over the next 10 minutes of action. Minnesota found the back of the net first in the 14th minute as Patricia Ward scored off a deflection to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead.
 
Penn State had several shots go just wide of the next in the ensuing minutes as it looked for the equalizing goal.
 
The Gophers extended their lead with a diving header that found its way into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
 
The teams went into the locker room with the Gophers ahead 2-0.
 
Minnesota pushed its lead to 3-0 on a goal by McKenna Buisman in the 58th minute of play.
 
A minute following the Minnesota goal, Rachel Wasserman sent a blast that ricocheted off the cross bar and nearly cut the lead to 3-1.
 
In the 63rd minute, Sam Coffey had a free kick sail just high of the net. Two minutes later, Kerry Abello sent a shot that went wide right of frame as Penn State attempted to find the net for the first time.
 
An own goal from the Nittany Lions pushed Minnesota's lead to 4-0 in the 74th minute.
 
Riley Gleason netted her first career goal in the 89th minute to bring the final tally to 4-1 Minnesota.
 
Penn State returns to Jeffrey Field on Friday, October 8 to host Maryland.
