UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State women's soccer seniors, Kerry Abello and Sam Coffey, were named to the 2021 Academic All-District First Team on Thursday, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Academic All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in academics and athletics.
A three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, Kerry Abello (Batavia, Illinois) is one of the team captains for the Nittany Lions. She possesses a 4.0 cumulative GPA with a double undergraduate major in science and Spanish and is currently in graduate school for biomedical engineering. She has played in all 18 games this season and has 2 goals and 1 assist.
Sam Coffey (Sleepy Hollow, New York) earned first-team All-American and Scholar All-American honors in spring 2021 and is also a team captain. She has a 4.0 cumulative GPA and earned her degree in journalism in fall 2020. She is also in graduate school, studying intersection of race, gender, sport & law. Coffey has started all 18 matches this season and is the team leader for goals (8) and assists (7).
Both now advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America National ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honors will be selected in the coming weeks and announced in early December.
