Samantha Catantan Takes Home Gold in Day One of the Garret Open

University Park, Pa. - The Nittany Lion women's fencing team kicked off the Garret Open, bringing competition home to Penn State this weekend. Under the direction of interim head coach Adam Kaszubowski, the women were strong all day during day one of the competition.
 
Sophomore Samantha Catantan (Quezon City, Philippines) took home gold in foil going 5-0 in the challenge bracket on Saturday. Ari Proietti (Como, Italy) finished in 11th place going 1-1. Mikaela Yhip  (Chico, Calf.), Sofia McGoff (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) and Ariel Rastep (San Francisco, Calif. ) each went 0-1 finishing in 23rd, 29th and 31st place respectively. Anusha Vohra (Milpitas, Calif.) ended the day in 36th. Freshman Claire Haas (Port Matilda, Pa.)  finished the day in 47th.
 
In women's epee, Jaclyn Khrol (Brooklyn, N.Y.)  went 4-1 taking silver. Sabine Desamours (Warrenton, Va.) tied for third, going 3-1. Additionally, Kateryna Chorniy (Kyiv, Ukraine) finished in 7th ending with a 2-1 record. Axelle Wasiak (Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium) went 1-1 ending in 13th. Nirali Igoe (Washington, D.C.) and Jordan Liverant (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ended in 19th and 25th respectively with a 0-1 record. Helen Myers (Victorville, Calif.) ended in 34th. Sophie Goldberg (Newtown, Pa.) took home 35th. Evelyn Pham (Houston, Texas) ended in 38th.
 
Pauline Conscience (Paris, France) and Steph Jen (Taichung, Taiwan) each had a 2-1 record ending in 5th and 8th respectively in women's saber. Xime Iriarte-Estrada (Huixquilucan, Mexico) ended in 48th place.
 
Day two of the Garret Open begins Sunday, Nov. 7 at 8:30 am when the men's team will be competing. Live results for the event can be viewed here.
