COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Makenna Marisa led the Lady Lions with 29 points, including 24 in the second half, but the Penn State women's basketball team fell 106-78 at No. 10 Maryland on Thursday at the Xfinity Center. The Lady Lions are now 7-6 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play, while the Terrapins improved to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Marisa tallied her eighth 20-point game of the season with a team-high 29. She recorded 24 points in the second half, going 10-of-12 from the floor and three-of-four from three. Marisa added three assists. Leilani Kapinus contributed 12 points, including eight in the second half, two steals and a block. Shay Hagans had 10 points, on four-of-five from the floor, and three assists. Anna Camden notched nine points and six rebounds. Penn State shot 47 percent from the floor and 56 percent in the second half.
Maryland was led by Diamond Miller's 24 points, on 10-of-13 from the floor. Ashley Owusu registered 20 points, while Shyanne Sellers had 17 and Angel Reese recorded 15 points and 14 rebounds. The Terrapins shot 55 percent from the floor and tallied 21 assists and 16 steals.
The Terrapins led 26-11 after the first quarter. After a three and a jumper by Marisa, the Terrapins responded with a 10-0 run, including six points by Miller and four by Owusu. PSU was led by Marisa's five points in the quarter.
Penn State scored 17 points in the second with seven Lady Lions contributing, including threes by Camden, Kelly Jekot and Tova Sabel. A 10-0 run by Maryland, including five points by Miller, put the Terrapins ahead, 47-22. The Lady Lions closed the gap with threes by Camden and Sabel, but Owusu answered with a trey to close out the quarter with a 53-28 advantage by Maryland.
The Lady Lions tallied 22 points in the third quarter, led by 10 points from Marisa and six each by Camden and Kapinus. Maryland's 28 points in the quarter included a 12-1 run featuring five points by Owusu.
Penn State outscored Maryland, 28-25, in the fourth quarter. Marisa poured in 14 points, hitting six-of-seven shots. Hagans added six points and Maddie Burke hit a three. Penn State closed out the game, scoring 14 of the final 21 points.
The Lady Lions return to the Bryce Jordan Center for the first time in over a month to welcome No. 8 Michigan on Thursday, January 13. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with a broadcast on B1G+.
