SOUTH BEND, Ind. – No. 13 Notre Dame scored once in each period as the Irish defeated Penn State, 3-0, to complete the weekend sweep in Big Ten Conference action on Saturday evening inside Compton Family Ice Arena.
The Nittany Lions fall to 14-15-1 on the year and 5-14-1-1-1-1 in Big Ten play while Notre Dame improves to 20-9-0 overall and 12-6-0-5-1-0 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Notre Dame opened the scoring for the fourth time in four games this season against Penn State as Tyler Carpenter slipped the puck through Nittany Lion senior goaltender Oskar Autio (Espoo, Finland) from between the rings for the 1-0 edge at 10:19 of the first period.
- Jesse Lansdell extended the lead for the hosts midway through the second period as he snuck a shot shortside and inside the far post for the 2-0 lead at the 10:16 mark.
- Adam Karashik added an empty net goal at 17:36 of the third period to account for the 3-0 final.
GOALTENDING
Autio falls to 10-12-0 on the year after making 25 saves in the defeat while his counterpart, Ryan Bischel, runs his record to 10-4-0 after stopping all 35 shots he faced for the shutout victory.
NOTES
- Notre Dame has now scored the first goal in five-straight games against Penn State dating back to last season. The Irish complete the season sweep of the Nittany Lions earning 11 of the possible 12 conference points.
- Penn State held the 35-28 edge in shots on goal while neither team was awarded a powerplay in the game.
- The only penalties were matching roughing calls and a tripping call followed by embellishment.
- Penn State is now just 1-12-0 this season when its opponent scores first. The Nittany Lions are also now 0-8-1 when trailing entering the third period.
