UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State baseball junior catcher Matt Wood was named to the Buster Posey Award Watch List on Thursday. Wood is one of 76 members of the watch list and one of four Big Ten catchers on the list.
The Buster Posey Award is given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher.
Through 11 games in 2022, Wood is batting .333 with three doubles and leads the team with three homers, nine RBI and 13 runs.
Wood has four multi-hit games and two multi-RBI games this season.
On opening weekend, Wood went 6-for-14 at the plate (.429) with two doubles and three homers while driving in seven RBI and scoring eight runs. Wood went three-for-four with four RBI and four runs while crushing two homers and a double in game one against LIU. He added a homer against Northeastern.
The junior earned Big Ten Player of the Week accolades on March 2 after going 5-for-11 (.454) in the series against Maine with two RBI and four runs.
In D1baseball's preseason rankings, Wood was tabbed as the top catcher in the Big Ten and the 16th-best catcher in the country.
In 2021, Wood was named Second Team All-Big Ten after batting .295 with 10 doubles, a triple, four homers and 21 RBI. He collected 11 multi-hit games and six multi-RBI games.
The Nittany Lions begin a three-game series against UMass on Friday at noon. Saturday's contest begins at 1 p.m. and Sunday's series finale is set for 11 a.m. All games will be livestreamed through USA Baseball.
