ATLANTA, Ga. – Penn State swimming's Marie Schobel finished her first day of competition at the 2022 NCAA Championships with a new school record and a 23rd place finish in the 100 back. She'll compete again this morning at the McAuley Aquatic Center.

Schobel swam to a time of 52.13 in the 100 back at the championships in Atlanta, Georgia and broke the Penn State school record, held by Mackenzie Powers for eight years, by 0.06 seconds. Powers swam the event in 52.19 in 2014.

The senior also has a NCAA B-Cut in the 200 back (1:54.37) and will swim the race this morning in the 10 a.m. prelim session. She's seeded 42nd against the best collegiate swimmers in America.

Earlier this year, Schobel finished fifth in the 200 back at the B1G Ten Championships with a lifetime best (1:54.37). She's the Nittany Lion's third fastest swimmer in the event.

Live stats are available on Meet Mobile and at the above provided link. All swimming can be streamed on ESPN3.

Schobel also swam at the 2021 NCAA Championships and finished 22nd (52.66) and 39th (1:56.17) in the 100 and 200 back.

The previous year, she qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championships in the 100 backstroke but was not able to attending due to COVID-19 cancellations.
