Kateryna Chorniy Takes Home All-American Title for Women’s Fencing

University Park, Pa. - Kateryna Chorniy (Kyiv, Ukraine) earned All-American honors for the second time in epee at day two of the NCAA fencing championships, the final day of women's competitions. Chorniy finished competing today, tying for third place with a 0.696 percentage.

Also competing for Penn State for the women included Axelle Wasiak (Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium) in epee and Samantha Catantan (Quezon City, Philippines) in foil. Ola Strzalkowski (Littleton, Colo.) and Pauline Conscience (Paris, France) represented in women's saber. 

Men's competitions will begin tomorrow with five fencers representing Penn State in every weapon. In epee, Ryan Griffiths (Fair Lawn, N.J.) will be Penn State's sole representative. Arwen Borowiak (Tauberbischofsheim, Germany) and Sebastiano Bicego (Vicenza, Italy) will compete in foil. Finally, Kamar Skeete (Duluth, Ga.) and Clement Perrier (Allauch, France) will compete in saber.

​​Penn State has won 13 combined NCAA Championships in its storied history and three women's titles before the championship became a combined event. The Nittany Lions finished second last year as Penn State hosted the NCAA Championships in the Bryce Jordan Center. Griffiths claimed the NCAA individual title in the epee to lead Penn State. Penn State had 10 All-Americans a year ago.
