UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.- The Penn State softball team (18-13, 1-2 Big Ten) dropped the third game of its first Big Ten series of the season to Maryland 6-4 on Saturday.
Both teams were able to hit the ball in play to start the game, but Trin Schlotterbeck limited the Nittany Lions to only one hit over the final 4.1 innings of the game. Liana Jones hit her second home run of the season and Michelle Leone notched an RBI in the loss.
How It Happened
The Nittany Lions were the team to get the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning. Lilia Crouthamel ripped a ball into the gap in right center field which resulted in her second triple of the season. Liana Jones then stepped up to bat and rocketed a ball over the center field fence, giving Penn State the 2-0 advantage.
The Terrapin offense responded in the next half inning, bringing in four runs to make it a 4-2 game. Penn State then came right back, bringing in two runs of its own through an RBI single by Michelle Leone and a passed ball that saw Lauren Marcotte score.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Terrapins scored through RBI from Megan Mikami and Mackense Grecio, giving Maryland the 6-4 advantage.
From there, the Nittany Lions struggled to get on base. Trin Schlotterbeck held on for her seventh win of the season while Bailey Parshall was credited with the loss in relief.
Game Notes
- Cassie Lindmark extended her on base streak to 15 games. It remains longest streak by a Nittany Lion this season
- Lauren Marcotte reached base for her seventh straight game. Her season high streak is nine games.
- Lilia Crouthamel hit the her second triple of the season, which is the third triple from Penn State in 2022.
- Liana Jones hit her second home run of the season in the loss.
