PHILADELPHIA – The Penn State track and field teams earned event victories in the women's sprint medley relay and women's long jump, bringing home another relay wheel in the SMR, to highlight a strong second day of competition at the 126th Penn Relays Friday at Penn's Franklin Field.
The Nittany Lions have now combined for four first-place finishes after two days of competition.
The women's sprint medley relay team of Jane Madson, Yasmin Brooks, Rachel Gearing and Victoria Tachinski clocked a relay time of 3:48.47 to win the College Women's Sprint Medley Championship of America. The group's victory marks back-to-back Penn Relays that Penn State has brought back an SMR wheel back to State College, as the Nittany Lions also accomplished the feat the last time the Penn Relays were held in 2019.
Winning her first-ever Penn Relays gold, Chloe Royce came out on top of the college women's long jump with a wind-assisted (+3.3) leap of 6.12m (20-1) to mark a new season-best performance.
In the men's relay, the 4x400 team of James Onwuka, Korbin Martino, Darius Smallwood and Olivier Desmeules qualified for the championship finals on Saturday with a time of 3:08.93 to finish fourth in the preliminary heat. The finals are set for a 3:35 p.m. start time Saturday.
Yasmin Brooks also qualified for the finals on Saturday in the women's 100m hurdles with a time of 13.44 to finish fifth overall in the preliminary heats.
The field events saw Duane Knisely place second in men's shot put with a personal-best throw of 17.57m (57-7.75). Freshman Isaac Osifo also earned a second-place finish in the men's high jump by clearing a new outdoor personal-record height of 2.09m (6-10.25).
Competition at the 126th Penn Relays concludes Saturday beginning at noon on the field with the college women's long jump championship and the college men's pole vault championship. Action on the track resumes at 12:30 with the college women's 4x1500 Championship of America.
