UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's basketball team will welcome Butler to the Bryce Jordan Center for the 2022 Gavitt Tipoff Games on Monday, Nov. 14, as matchups for the seventh-annual event were announced Friday morning. The 2022-23 Penn State men's basketball season is presented by Highmark Health.
Tipoff times and television network designations will be announced at a later date, with all eight Gavitt Tipoff Games contests airing on FS1 or BTN.
Penn State and Butler are set to meet for the first time since 1992 and the third time in program history. The most recent meeting was a 67-64 Penn State win in Happy Valley in the backend of a home-and-home on Feb. 12, 1992.
Penn State is 2-1 all-time in Gavitt Games matchups and the Nittany Lions make their return to the event for the first time since 2019 when Penn State earned a dominant 81-66 win at Georgetown. The Nittany Lions' previous two Gavitt Games contests were against DePaul, with Penn State earning a home win in 2015, the first year of the event, and the Blue Demons taking an overtime victory in Chicago in 2018.
The Gavitt Tipoff Games is a unique early-season series played between the Big Ten and the BIG EAST, and named in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary. The Big Ten has won the series twice, the BIG EAST claimed victory once, and the two conferences tied 4-4 in the event on three occasions.
Penn State enters its second season under Peter and Ann Tombros Endowed Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry in 2022-23. The Nittany Lions return a core group of upperclassmen in addition to welcoming three highly-accomplished graduate transfers and an incoming freshmen class of five that is the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history.
