Four Nittany Lions Invited To 2022 USA Hockey Women's National Festival

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Four Penn State women's hockey student-athletes along with associate head coach Allison Coomey have been invited to the 2022 USA Hockey Women's National Festival as announced by USA Hockey Tuesday.

Junior goaltender Josie Bothun, freshman forward Tessa Janecke, senior defender Mallory Uihlein and junior forward Kiara Zanon were the Penn State players selected to the National Festival, which consists of 116 invitees and will take place Aug. 8-13 at the LECOM Harborcenter in Buffalo, N.Y.

The camp will be used to decide the 2022 U.S. Women's National Team and Collegiate Select Team.

Through 55 career starts in goal, Bothun has set program records in wins with 34 and shutouts with 13. She also has a 1.59 goals-against average which is also stands as a program best while also sporting a .931 save percentage.

In 2021-22 Bothun set single-season program highs with 18 victories and seven shutouts while also being named CHA Goaltender of the Week seven times. Her seven shutouts ranked second nationally. She was recently invited to the 2022 USA Nationals Goaltending Camp in May.

Tessa Janecke has made waves in the national women's hockey scene prior to joining the Penn State program for her first season in 2022-23. The Orangeville, Ill. native was spectacular with USA's U18 team at the 2022 IIHF U18 Championships as the center for its top line. She had six points on three goals and three assists in the U.S.'s silver-medal run.

Janecke stuffed the stat sheet with North America Hockey Academy in 2021-22, scoring 46 goals and 74 assists for a whopping 120 points in 78 games.

Mallory Uihlein's invite to the National Festival comes after a stellar 2021-22 campaign where she also cemented herself as one of the nation's premier defenders. Uihlein set a program record among defenders with a 19-point season on six goals and 13 assists.

A smooth skater with great two-way play, the rising senior from Edina, Minn. elevated to fifth on the all-time defender scoring charts for Penn State with 39 points (9G, 30A) in 90 career games. She was picked an All-CHA first team performer in 2021-22.

Zanon has quickly emerged as one of the top playmakers in the country since coming to Penn State in 2020-21, when she became Penn State's first All-American and was the HCA National Rookie of the Year.

She showed no signs of slowing down in 2021-22, as the Fairport, N.Y. native became the fastest Nittany Lion to 50 career points, needing just 39 games to reach the milestone.

The two-time All-CHA first team selection currently has 68 points (23G, 46A) through 54 career games and tops the PSU career scoring chart with 1.27 points per game. Her 27 assists a season ago marked a new Penn State single-season record and her 39 points finished just behind Natalie Heising's 40 points for the most in a single season for a Nittany Lion.

Associate head coach Allison Coomey also returns to the National Festival as the U22 Head Coach, the same role she held in 2021.
