Penn State Swimming Shines at Swedish Nationals

Linkoping, Sweden – Senior Daniel Raisanen and graduate student William Lulek competed at the Swedish National Meet at the Medley Tinnerbacksbadet, earning a combined six gold medals from June 29 to July 3.

Raisanen swept the 50, 100 and 200 breast, earning personal records (PRs) alongside gold medals in each event. 
 
In the 50, the senior swimmer touched in 28.05, besting his old time by nearly a second. 
 
He then swam to a championship meet record in the 100. His time of 1:00.36 was two seconds faster than his previous best, set two months ago, and only 0.28 off the Swedish National Record. 
 
And in the 200, Raisanen qualified for the European Championships by six tenths of a second (2:11.63). His four-second PR allows him to compete in all three breaststroke events at the championship meet in Italy later this summer.
 
Raisanen also competed in the 50 free and 50 fly and swam the leadoff leg in the 400 free relay. At the conclusion of his national meet, Raisanen earned three gold medals and six PRs.  
 
William Lulek
Lulek swept the IM events, placing first in both the 200 and 400, in addition to a victory in the 200 back and a second in the 200 breast. 
 
The graduate student placed first in the 400 IM (4:24.73) and first in the 200 IM in a time that earned him a second PR (2:03.25). 
 
In the 200 back, Lulek nearly dropped another two seconds off his previous best, touching the wall in 2:04.60 and winning his third gold medal of the meet. 
 
And in the 200 breast he helped Penn State earn a 1-2 sweep in the event, finishing behind Raisanen and setting a new three-second PR (2:16.84).
