Schiemann Earns Trio of Weekly Honors

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — After a career performance last week, sophomore Mieke Schiemann has been recognized as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and named to the College Soccer News Women's National Team of the Week and to Top Drawer Soccer's Team of the Week announced on Tuesday.

As the only underclassman starter, Schiemann was instrumental on both sides of the ball in No. 10 Penn State's wins over No. 21 West Virginia (2-0) and Monmouth (3-1). The defender from Berlin, Germany notched her first career goal and first career assist against the Mountaineers last Thursday and then found the back of the net again in the game-winner versus the Hawks on Sunday.

On the defensive side, Schiemann helped prevent WVU from taking a shot until the 21st minute and limited the Mountaineers to just four shots on goal. At Monmouth, she headed away a cross inside the box and blocked a shot.

The College Soccer News National Team of the Week recognizes players who played a key role in the success their teams had during the week. Schiemann was one of 11 players recognized and the only underclassman to be honored.

On the Top Drawer Soccer list, Schiemann is the first PSU player to be recognized to the Team of the Week since May 4, 2021 when Eva Alonso anchored two shutout wins and scored against Vanderbilt.

At the conference level, Schiemann is the program's first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week since Oct. 25, 2018, when Maddie Nolf helped the PSU defense hold Indiana and Minnesota to an average of nine shot attempts per game and one combined goal. Offensively, Nolf chipped in an assist in Penn State's 4-1 win over Indiana.

Last week, Amelia White received the first league honor of the season as she was lauded Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week after tallying an assist in each of her first two collegiate matches.

No. 10 Penn State is 3-0-1 on the young season and travels to the west coast for matches at Stanford on Sept. 1 and Santa Clara on Sept. 4.

The Penn State women's soccer season is presented by the Smeal College of Business.
