COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The Penn State women's soccer program snapped a two-game skid by winning 2-0 at Maryland on Sunday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions were efficient on offense with all eight shots occurring on goal with two players finding the back of the net in junior Natalie Wilson and senior Cori Dyke.
Redshirt senior Katherine Asman finished with four saves in her seventh clean sheet of the season.
Maryland drops their fifth conference match in a row and falls to 2-6-5 overall and 1-5-0 in the Big Ten while Penn State moves to 8-3-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On PSU's second shot of the match in the 21st minute, Wilson scored her first career goal to put PSU on the board.
Senior+ Penelope Hocking headed the ball to Wilson who dribbled to the end line and struck the ball with her left foot finding the back of the net on the far post.
The Nittany Lions played strong defense as a few minutes later, senior+ Cassie Hiatt made a big block on a Maryland shot. The 37th minute saw UMD's first corner kick, which junior Kaitlyn MacBean promptly headed away.
In the 45th minute, UMD scored the equalizer off a free kick, but the call was reversed due to an offsides Terrapin.
Over a minute into the second half, freshman Oliva Smith got wedged between two defenders and knocked down inside the box drawing a yellow card for the Terps and a penalty kick of the Lions.
Redshirt senior Ally Schlegel took the penalty kick, but the Terps' keeper guessed the direction on the diving save.
In the 52nd minute, Smith got knocked to the turf again just outside the box giving PSU a free kick opportunity. Smith touched the ball to Dyke who blasted a shot into the net by the far post for the 2-0 advantage.
Not 30 seconds later, Asman made a big save on the line to keep PSU ahead. Asman also made clutch saves in the 69th minute grabbing a curling shot and in the 75th minute by punching away a corner and diving to her right on the recovery shot.
