Men’s Rugby Retain Sheehy Cup with 29-17 Victory

University Park, PA – Saturday, 5 November Men's Rugby played host to Rugby East opponent University of Mary Washington in the second annual competition for the Sheehy Cup.

The focus for the team recently has been starting games the right way. Penn State did just that and jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first half. Tries from Dan Morariu and Jack Hennigan and two conversions and a penalty off the boot of Captain flyhalf Dalton Musselman contributed to the hot start.

The match settled down in the second half as Mary Washington started putting phases together and threatening the Penn State line. After leaking a score early in the half Penn State held strong for the next 20 minutes. William Bumbernick picked up two tries in the second half, but this would not deter UMW who closed the gap late.

The surge was not enough from UMW and Penn State went on to win the match 29-17 and gain a bonus point on the day. This win bumps the team up to 6th in the Rugby East standings for 2022 with one match left to play in conference.

The team will travel to Notre Dame College, Saturday, 12 November at 12:00pm.
