UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State baseball sophomore infielder Kyle Hannon was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Wednesday. Hannon had an impressive three-game series this past weekend at Virginia, ranked No. 5 by Baseball America.
Hannon won his first career Big Ten weekly honor. The Nittany Lions have won back-to-back Big Ten Player of the Week awards after Matt Wood earned the accolade on March 2.
Penn State has back-to-back Big Ten Players of the Week for the first time since April 2016 when Greg Guers (April 18) and Nick Riotto (April 11) won the award.
Hannon went seven-for-eight at the plate this weekend (.875 average), including three doubles. The sophomore reached base in 11-of-12 plate appearances with one walk and two hit-by-pitches. He also had one RBI, two runs and a stolen base. For the weekend, Hannon had a 1.250 slugging percentage and a .909 on-base percentage.
On Friday, he went two-for-two with a double, a run and a walk.
Hannon collected three hits in three at-bats on Saturday with a double and an RBI single. He reached base a fourth time on a hit-by-pitch.
On Sunday, the Harrisburg native went two-for-three with a double and reached on a hit-by-pitch.
On the season, Hannon leads Penn State with a .382 average and 13 hits.
The lefty is batting .692 when facing left-handed pitching this season, going 9-for-13. He was six-for-six against Virginia lefties.
Penn State returns to Cary, N.C. to host UMass for a three-game series on March 11-13. Friday's game will start at 2 p.m, while Saturday is a 1 p.m. start. Sunday's finale is set for an 11 a.m. first pitch.
