UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men's basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry announced the additions of Andrew Funk and Camren Wynter to the Nittany Lion program Tuesday. Both student-athletes join as graduate transfers with one season of eligibility remaining.
Funk, a 6-5 guard, comes to Penn State after a strong four-year career at Bucknell where he was an All-Patriot League performer and the 2022 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Wynter, a 6-2 guard, completed a stellar four-year career at Drexel where he was a three-time All-CAA pick and two-time All-District selection. Both Funk and Wynter were ranked in ESPN's top 100 available transfers for the 2022-23 season, and combine to bring 2,887 career points, 839 career rebounds, and 772 career assists to the Penn State backcourt.
Andrew Funk – 6-5 Guard – Warrington, Pa. – Archbishop Wood - Bucknell
Funk averaged double-digit points in each of his final three seasons at Bucknell, including a team-best and career-high 17.6 ppg during his senior season in 2021-22. The Warrington, Pa. native notched 13 20-point games and three 30-point performances as a senior, while shooting 43.2 percent from the field, 36.3 percent from 3-point range, and 76.1 percent from the free throw line to earn second team All-Patriot League honors.
A three-year starter, Funk scored his 1,000th career point on Jan. 22, 2022 and comes to Happy Valley with career marks of 1,230 points, 346 rebounds and 195 assists. Funk averaged 12.9 points per game and 10.8 points per contest in his junior and sophomore seasons, respectively.
A true student-athlete, Funk was the 2022 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an Academic All-District honoree, and a three-time selection to the Academic All-Patriot League team. He will graduate with a bachelor's degree in business administration from Bucknell in May.
Funk enjoyed a standout high school career at Archbishop Wood where he was named the Philadelphia Catholic League Player of the Year as a senior and led the Vikings to their first-ever Philadelphia Catholic League championship and the Class 5A PIAA state championship as a junior.
Shrewsberry on Funk: "In college basketball there is no substitute for being able to make 3-point shots, and Andrew Funk is someone who has proven more than capable of that during his decorated four-year career at Bucknell. While Andrew is well-known for his shooting, we noticed how good of a passer he is as well when we studied his film. His passing and ability to create for others is what separates him from most players and should allow him to be a tough matchup for other guards in our conference. Beyond just basketball, Andrew is also a tremendous student and person. He checks every box you could want for a Penn State student-athlete and should be a great mentor for our younger players to look up to on and off the court."
Camren Wynter – 6-2 Guard – Hempstead, N.Y. – Holy Trinity - Drexel
Wynter averaged double-digit points in all four of his seasons at Drexel, posting at least 15 points per game in his final three seasons. Wynter picked up first team All-CAA honors for the second-straight season, in addition to an NABC All-District nod, in 2022 after ending his senior season third in the league in scoring (15.8), second in assists (4.6) and third in free-throw percentage (86.1).
Wynter earned CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors as a junior after leading the Dragons to their first-ever CAA championship and first NCAA Tournament appearance in 25 years. He averaged 16.3 points per game while shooting 41.5 percent from 3-point range during his junior season to earn All-District and first team All-Conference nods. The Hempstead, N.Y. native also earned second team All-Conference honors as a sophomore and was the 2019 CAA Rookie of the Year as a freshman.
Wynter comes to Penn State with career marks of 1,657 points, 577 assists and 493 rebounds. His 577 assists rank third on Drexel's all-time list, his 1,657 points rank sixth, and his 140 steals are good for eighth all-time in Dragon history.
Wynter played his high school ball at Holy Trinity where he was an All-State and All-Long Island pick. He played a postgraduate season at DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Fla. before beginning his collegiate career at Drexel. Wynter will graduate from Drexel with a bachelor's degree in business administration in May.
Shrewsberry on Wynter: "From the minute that Cam entered the transfer portal, we identified him as one of the premier players available and someone who could greatly help our team. Cam is an excellent player who can play the point guard or shooting guard position, and provides not only scoring, but also good passing and an ability to rebound from the guard spot. While Cam's numbers are impressive, what really stood out to us from the very beginning was both his high basketball IQ and his character. When evaluating transfers, it is very important to identify individuals who will fit in with your team both on and off the court, and there is no doubt Cam should take on a leadership role with next year's team. Cam is someone who brings tremendous character and should be a leader of the culture within our program from the minute he steps on campus."
Funk and Wynter will join a core group of Nittany Lion returnees, in addition to the incoming freshman class of five that is the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history for the 2022-23 season and Shrewsberry's second year at the helm of the Nittany Lion program.
