UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State senior John Kerr was named the AVCA National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Player of the Week on Tuesday thanks to his performance in wins over No. 5 Pepperdine and No. 8 Stanford at the First Point Collegiate Challenge.
Kerr averaged 4.94 points/set against Penn State's two top-10 opponents. He opened the tournament with 20 kills on .421 hitting in addition to five digs and three blocks in the win over the Waves. He followed that with 15 kills, two aces, eight digs and a block in the win over the Cardinal. The Lions were the only team to go 2-0 at the event and are 6-0 for the first time since 2009. Three of the six wins came against ranked opponents.
Kerr has totaled 15 or more kills in each of Penn State's three wins over nationally-ranked teams this season. For the season, he's hitting .411 while averaging 4.11 kills/set.
Penn State has now won 20 AVCA National Player of the Week awards. Kerr is the first to receive the honor since Sam Marsh early last season. Current graduate student Cal Fisher won the award in 2021.
The Lions are 6-0 for the first time since 2009. They have a huge matchup with No. 3 Long Beach State scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Rec Hall.
