Lady Lions Beat Boilermakers 70-60 at Home

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State (11-5, 2-3) picked up a Big Ten win over Purdue (11-4, 2-3) 70-60 Saturday afternoon in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Penn State made five three-pointers in the first quarter, two from Anna Camden helping them to finish out the period ahead 20-15. Leilani Kapinus was all over the court, making three of PSU's four steals.

The Lady Lions opened the second with a 9-2 run putting them ahead by their largest lead of 12. In the final two minutes, Purdue whittled its deficit down to two possessions, but Penn State would grab momentum on a buzzer-beating jumper from Taniyah Thompson off a near full-court pass from the inbounder Kapinus. Thompson made a move to shake her defender and shot a jumper that swished in the basket as the buzzer sounded for the 41-33 lead.

Just over three minutes into the second half, Penn State scored seven unanswered to edge ahead 15 points. The Lady Lions maintained their double-digit lead through the end of the third ahead 60-49.

Late turnovers began to plague Penn State as the Boilermakers used an 11-2 run to come within four points, the closest since the first quarter. With over two minutes to go, Makenna Marisa made a second-chance jumper bringing Penn State's lead back to two possessions.

Purdue moved the ball up the court but was interrupted by Kapinus who stole the ball and made a move in the paint making the layup and drawing the foul to put Penn State up eight points with 90 seconds left.

The following Purdue possession was disrupted by Chanaya Pinto who dished the ball to Shay Ciezki making the jumper putting the Lady Lions back in double digits to finish the game.
