Women’s Tennis Falls 4-1 at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Penn State women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision at Notre Dame on Friday afternoon. Olivia Dorner picked up a win at No. 5 singles for the Nittany Lions.
 
The Blue and White begin Big Ten play on Sunday at Illinois. The match is set to start at 1 p.m. The Fighting Illini enter the weekend with a 4-3 record.
 
Doubles
At the top doubles spot, Sofiya Chekhlystova and Carla Girbau battled Notre Dame's Page Freeman and Bojana Pozder, but fell 6-3.
 
Ioana Gheorghita and Alexandra Nielsen took on the Fighting Irish's Julia Andreach and Carrie Beckman at No. 2. The Nittany Lion pair dropped a 6-2 decision.
 
At No. 3, Olivia Dorner and Karly Friedland were tied at 5-5 with Notre Dame's Rylie Hanford and Yashna Yellayi when the match was stopped.
 
Singles
Freshman Olivia Dorner competed against Notre Dame's Carrie Beckman at No. 5 singles. Dorner took the first set, 6-4, and completed the sweep with a 6-4 second set. Dorner moved to 8-1 in dual meets.
 
In a battle of ranked opponents at the top singles spot, Sofia Chekhlystova, ranked No. 50 in the country, met No. 91 Page Freeman. However, Chekhlystova fell 6-4, 7-6.
 
Yvonne Zuffova dropped a 6-4, 7-5 result at No. 2, while Ioana Gheorghita fell 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 against Notre Dame's Yashna Yellayi, ranked No. 115 in the nation.
 
At No. 4, Carla Girbau was leading 5-3 in the second set, when the match was stopped, after dropping her first set, 7-5. At No. 6, Alexandra Nielsen was trailing 5-2 in the second set after falling 7-6 in the opening frame.
