UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State Swimming and Diving had eight student-athletes named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, announced Tuesday by the organization.
The criteria to be met for nomination include holding full-time student status having not transferred institutions, as well as earning a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
From the men's squad, four student-athletes are recognized for their extraordinary performances in the classroom and in their communities.
Ben Doyle is a junior on the men's squad who holds a 3.93 cumulative GPA with a declared major in Biology. Doyle earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the Fall 2022 semester and has been named to the university's Dean's List beginning his freshman semester in the Fall of 2020. Recently, he was named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America second team and the Academic All Big Ten and second team Academic All Big Ten Distinguished Scholar lists. Outside the classroom, Doyle has contributed to his Penn State community as a swimming and diving team representative during the Penn State THON Athlete hour at THON 2022, and as well volunteering with fellow team member Jacob Oberle's, swim clinic at the State College YMCA.
Senior Lachlan Byrne is a senior studying Economics and currently holds a 3.92 cumulative GPA. In 2022, Byrne was named first team Scholar All-America and was named to the Penn State Athletics Nittany's All-Academic team. He is also a recipient of the Ellen Perry and Robert Krimmel Academic Achievement Award in 2022.
Calvin Wise is a junior studying Mathematics with a 3.79 GPA. Wise was named to the Academic All Big Ten and Big Ten Distinguished Scholars lists and served his Penn State community as a dancer in THON 2021 to represent the Penn State Swimming and Diving team.
Junior Tommy Hurley is studying Computational Data Science and currently holds a 3.64 cumulative GPA. Hurley has received Academic All Big Ten honors and is a member of the Athletic Directors Leadership Institute. He plays an active role in his Penn State community as a volunteer for RePlay State College Community Involvement, and served as a Swimming and Diving representative during the Penn State THON Athlete hour at THON 2021, later as a dancer at THON 2022.
From the women's squad, four student-athletes are as well recognized for their outstanding community involvement and academic success.
Molly Carson is a sophomore on the women's squad who holds a Fisheries Studies and currently holds a cumulative 4.0 GPA. Carson was named to the 2022 CSCAA Scholar All-America second team and received the Nittany Lion Award in 2022. She was also named to the 2023 Outstanding Undergraduate in the sophomore class of her sorority, Gamma Sigma Delta.
Anna Redican is a current junior on the women's team and holds a 3.91 cumulative GPA with a Business major. Redican has been named to the university's Dean's List since her freshman year in the fall of 2020, and as well is a member of SAAB, the Student-Athlete Advisory Board at University Park.
Mac Sullivan is a sophomore in the college of Health and Human Development and currently holds a 3.89 cumulative GPA, and as well has been named to the university's Dean's List since the fall of 2022. Sullivan was a recipient of the President Walker Award in 2022, and as well is a member of SAAB.
Senior Ellie Tiskus holds a 3.8 cumulative GPA with an International Politics major. She has been named to the university's Dean's List since her freshman year in the fall of 2019, receiving the Penn State University President's Freshman Award for a 4.0 GPA that year, and is a Schreyer's Honors Scholar in the Penn State Honors College. For the 2020-21 academic year, Tiskus received Nittany All-Academic Team status for the highest team GPA that year and was named to Academic All Big Ten in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years. Tiskus is currently the Director of Student Engagement for the Penn State Student Philanthropy Network and is a member of the Veteran Athletic Directors Leadership Institute. Tiskus as well served her Penn State community as a dancer for SAAB in THON 2021.
All-District selections will advance to the Academic All-America nominations which will be announced later this season.
