Men's Gymnastics Hosts Michigan for Top Five Battle in Rec Hall

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.- Penn State men's gymnastics is set to host Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 11 in Rec Hall. The top five match up between no. 5 Penn State and no. 3 Michigan will begin at 4 p.m. and will be available to stream on Big Ten Plus. 
 
Penn State is ranked fifth in Road to Nationals rankings this week as well as fifth in the Big Ten. 
 
Junior captain Matt Cormier earned his third Big Ten Gymnast of the Week title this week after another dominant performance at Illinois this past weekend. He is currently ranked first in the country on floor, second on vault and fifth on high bar.

GAME PROMO

  • This will be Penn State's THON meet. Four THON captains will present the Wettstone Award to the winning gymnast.
  • There will be pizza provided by Penn State men's gymnastics following the meet.
  • Kid Zone will be open on the mezzanine in Rec Hall throughout the meet.

 
LAST TIME OUT
Penn State lost its most recent match up against Illinois 401.750-408.800 last weekend. 
 
Cormier earned himself another Gymnast of the Week nod after taking first on high bar (13.900), second on floor (14.050) and second on vault (14.600). Although he was the lone all-around competitor, he nearly reached his career high at 81.700 on Saturday.
 
Sophomore Josh Karnes took his second straight parallel bars event title last weekend with a score of 14.300.
 
Freshman Matt Underhill claimed fourth on rings (13.450) and tied for third on vault with his best score of the season (14.550).
 
Junior Michael Jaroh notched a season best on vault (14.550) tying him with Underhill for third place. Another season best for the Nittany Lions came from Ethan Dick on pommel horse (13.950).
 
HISTORY WITH MICHIGAN 
Despite Michigan claiming the most recent battle between the two teams, the Nittany Lions posted one of their best team scores of the season, 401.800. Penn State leads the series 14-9.
 
SCOUTING MICHIGAN
The Wolverines earned their season best road score in their win at Nebraska last weekend (408.200). Michigan strung together three event titles on high bar, vault and parallel bars. 
 
Freshman Landen Blixt was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week this week after the team's win this weekend and his performance.
 
Michigan ranks second in the country on floor, third on rings and second on parallel bars.
