Women’s Lacrosse Heads to No. 14 Princeton on Saturday

 UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.- Penn State women's lacrosse travels to No. 14 Princeton for a top-25 match-up. First draw at Sherrerd Field in Princeton, N.J. is set for noon. The Nittany Lions look to snap a three-game series win streak for Princeton as they take on their second Tigers of the week.
 
Penn State made its return to the rankings this week at 25 nationally and first in the Big Ten.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State won its most recent game against Towson on Tuesday, March 14 in a last second, game-winning goal from Kara Nealon. After the Nealon sisters connected with 45 seconds remaining, from Regan to Kara, the Nittany Lions earned a 13-12 win. 
  • Junior Gretchen Gilmore scored 3 of her 4 goals in the first quarter. 
  • The game remained close for its entirety, with six tie scores and no lead larger than three goals. 

NITTANY LIONS IN THE RANKS

  • Penn State ranks first in the Big Ten in caused turnovers (84) and ninth nationally. It also ranks ranks 11th in the country in ground balls (151).
  • The Nittany Lions are second in the conference in shots on goal per game (24). 
  • Sammy Dupcak ranks 17th nationally in ground balls (23) and second in the Big Ten. She is also fourth in the conference in caused turnovers per game (1.75). 
  • Kristin O'Neill is 21st in the country in goals (25) and third in the Big Ten.

  • The Nittany Lions and the Tigers have a long history, dating back to 1982 with 40 games played between the two teams.
  • Princeton leads the series 27-13.
  • The Nittany Lions look to snap a three-game win streak for the Tigers in Saturday's game.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS

  • Princeton is coming off an 11-8 win over Southern California last week.

  • Freshman goal keeper Amelia Hughes was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after making 14 saves against USC and is No. 2 in the country in saves-per-game. 

NITTANY LIONS TO WATCH

  • O'Neill, Dupcak and Ellie Hollin were named Big Ten Players to Watch in the preseason.
  • O'Neill was also named to The Tewaaraton Award Watch List and selected by Inside Lacrosse as a Top 100 Returning Player at the start of this season.
  • Freshmen Erika Ho, Maggie Golder and Emma Kelly were placed on Inside Lacrosse's Power Top 100 Freshman List.
  • Elise Smigiel joins Penn State as a sophomore transfer from Marquette.  

2023 CAPTAINS

  • Head coach Missy Doherty named seniors Rachel Spilker and Regan Nealon and junior Kristin O'Neill as captains for the 2023 season.
  • This is Spilker's second season as a co-captain for the Nittany Lions.
