Women’s Lacrosse Hosts Ohio State on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.- Penn State women's lacrosse looks for its second Big Ten win and fifth consecutive win when it welcomes Ohio State on Saturday, March 25. First draw is set for 2:30 p.m. and will be nationally televised on the Big Ten Network. The Nittany Lions will be honoring their eight seniors prior to the the game in a Senior Day ceremony.
 
Junior Gretchen Gilmore was named the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week and IL/IWLCA Co-Offensive Player of the Week this week (3/21) after her 10-goal performance last week. She posted four goals in a 13-12 win over Towson and six goals in a 16-14 win at No. 14 Princeton.
 
Penn State is ranked 20th in the IL/IWLCA Poll this week and is second in the Big Ten.

GAME PROMOTION

  • Saturday, Penn State will celebrate its Senior Day prior to the start of the game. Eight seniors and their families will be showcased on the field at Panzer. At halftime, the Nittany Lions will honor the alumni in attendance at the game.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Penn State took down Pitt on Tuesday, March 21, 15-12. 
  • O'Neill scored her 100th career goal and increased her scoring streak to 14 consecutive games with at least one goal scored.
  • Kayla Abernathy scored the first hat trick of her career with a career high four goals. She also matched her personal best eight draw controls.
  • Brooke Hoss scored a hat trick for the second consecutive game and the third time this season with her four goals.
  • Penn State won the draw control battle 21-10 and outshot the Panthers 31-24.
  • The Nittany Lions continued a four-game winning steak as well as a four-game streak of having at least one player record a hat trick.
  • O'Neill also continued a streak of multi-goal games bumping the total to seven consecutive games with at least two goals. She has had multi-goal performances in nine of the 10 games so far this season.

NITTANY LIONS IN THE RANKS

  • Penn State ranks first in the Big Ten in caused turnovers (105) and fifth nationally as well as sixth in ground balls (178).
  • The Nittany Lions are second in the conference in shots on goal per game (24.60) and third in the country. 
  • Sammy Dupcak ranks 10th nationally in ground balls (29) and second in the conference. She is also third in the Big Ten and 15th nationally in caused turnovers (19).
  • Kristin O'Neill is eigth in the country in goals (33) and third in the Big Ten.

PENN STATE –OHIO STATE SERIES

  • The Nittany Lions and the Buckeyes have a 30-game history that Penn State leads 21-9.
  • Ohio State has come away with the previous three wins, all played in Columbus. The most recent game was in March of 2022 when the Buckeyes edged the Nittany Lions by just one goal at a score of 12-11.
  • Penn State is 10-2 in home games against Ohio State.
  • O'Neill scored two games in each of her outings against the Buckeyes in 2021 and 2022.
  • Hoss, O'Neill and Gilmore led the offense each with two goals in the most recent contest in 2022.

SCOUTING THE BUCKEYES

  • Ohio State is 4-6, 0-2 Big Ten so far this season with conference losses to Michigan and John's Hopkins. 
  • The Buckeyes finished their 2022 season 9-7 and did not advance to the Big Ten Tournament. 
  • Nicole Ferrara leads Ohio State in goals with 24 which ranks her fifth in the Big Ten.
  • Ohio State ranks fifth in the conference overall.

  • Gilmore was named the Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week and IL/IWLCA Co-Offensive Player of the Week this week (3/21)
  • O'Neill, Dupcak and Ellie Hollin were named Big Ten Players to Watch in the preseason.
  • O'Neill was also named to The Tewaaraton Award Watch List and selected by Inside Lacrosse as a Top 100 Returning Player at the start of this season.
  • Freshmen Erika Ho, Maggie Golder and Emma Kelly were placed on Inside Lacrosse's Power Top 100 Freshman List.
  • Elise Smigiel joins Penn State as a sophomore transfer from Marquette.  

2023 CAPTAINS

  • Head coach Missy Doherty named seniors Rachel Spilker and Regan Nealon and junior Kristin O'Neill as captains for the 2023 season.
  • This is Spilker's second season as a co-captain for the Nittany Lions.

Parking and Ticket Information

  • Tickets are walk-up only, $5 adults, $3 youth.
  • Saturday the BJC is hosing a Kenny Chesney concert so expect lots to be full quicker. The cash only, $20 day of rate will apply. Fans are encouraged to purchase parking prior to the day-of.
  • Parking for all Penn State Athletics' non-football events will require a valid permit or payment of the applicable parking fee for campus lots. Fans with valid Penn State University Park parking permits will be permitted to park at non-football athletics events for free, following Transportation Services parking policies and access.
  • For women's lacrosse games, fans are asked to park in the Jordan East, Stadium West or Porter North lots. Fans without a permit are encouraged to prepay for event parking at a discounted rate of $5.50 through ParkMobile - https://psu.parkmobile.io/. Prepayment is available through 11:59 p.m. the day prior to each event. Event day parking will be $20 per vehicle and is cash only/can be purchased on the ParkMobile app. The East Deck is also available for most events for $1 per hour.
