UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State men's golf team is set for its lone home tournament of the 2022-23 season this weekend when the Nittany Lions host the 46th-annual Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State's Blue Course Saturday and Sunday.
The 54-hole tournament plays at a par 71 with a 7,171-yard layout with two rounds on Saturday, April 15 and a final 18 holes on Sunday, April 16. Saturday's first round begins at 7:30 a.m. with the second round to follow. The final round Sunday begins at 8:00 a.m. Tee times and pairings for both days will be available on GolfStat.
The 12-team field includes host Penn State, Appalachian State, Cal Baptist, Central Michigan, Connecticut, Delaware, George Mason, Georgetown, Rhode Island, Temple, Towson and Valparaiso. George Mason is coached by Nittany Lion alumnus Greg Pieczynski '06.
Scores from Patrick Sheehan, Jake Griffin, James Allen, Jimmy Meyers and Billy Pabst Jr. are eligible to count toward Penn State's team total. Nittany Lions Jud Langille, Jack Zubkus and Morgan Lofland will participate as individuals.
The Nittany Lions have dominated the Rutherford since it was established as the Nittany Lion Invitational in 1975, winning the tournament 29 times including each of the last seven events. Twenty-one Penn State golfers have medaled atop the leaderboard, the last being James Allen in 2022.
The tournament became known as the Rutherford Intercollegiate in 1983 to honor R.B. "Pop" Rutherford Sr., the man known to the Nittany Lions as the "father of Penn State golf." Rutherford organized the first Penn State golf team in 1922 and coached it until 1949. R.B. Rutherford Jr. continued his father's coaching tradition from 1950-1956 and furthered a legacy recalled each spring.
Penn State has won seven-straight Rutherford Intercollegiate championships heading into this weekend's 46th edition of the event that has become one of the top events in the Northeast. The Nittany Lions won last season's tournament with a team score of 864 thanks in part to a strong final round that saw Penn State shoot a field-low 7-over, 291, in Sunday's final round. Penn State's James Allen earned the individual title after defeating teammate Patrick Sheehan in a tiebreak, as the two Nittany Lions finished first and second atop the individual leaderboard.
