Women’s Lacrosse Prepares for Trip to Spain and Portugal

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. The Penn State women's lacrosse team is set to travel to Portugal and Spain from June 1-9 to kick off the summer. This marks the team's first foreign trip since 2016 and Penn State's first since 2018.
 
"We are excited to provide this opportunity to our student-athletes," said head coach Missy Doherty. We are really looking forward to playing overseas while growing and sharing the sport of lacrosse."
 
The Nittany Lions will begin the trip in Lisbon with a Panormaic Tour of the capital city of Portugal. On the second day, the team will have the opportunity ti surf the beaches if Carcavelos, one of the finest beaches of the Lisbon coastline and conclude the adventure with a riding tour of Lisbon and a Fado Dinner with traditional dancing and music. 
 
Penn State will have the opportunity to hike in Sintra, one of Portugal's most scenic areas in the mountains. SIntra is a longtime royal sanctuary with its forested terrain and pastel-colored villas. Later in the day, the Lions will meet with local kids to get to know them and teach them more about the sport of lacrosse in an area where it is not as large but growing across the globe. The team will also embark on a tour of Benifica Stadium. The venue is a multi-purpose stadium in Lsibon but is used mostly for hosting games of S.L. Benefica in the Premiere Soccer League.
 
The next day, the team will play in a game against the Dutch National Team who will be traveling to play Penn State.
 
The Nittany Lions will get a chance to explore Spain with a walking tour of Seville on June 6. Seville is the capital of southern Spain's Andalusia region. It is famous for flamenco dancing. Major landmarks in the area include the ornate Alcázar Castle Complex, the 18th century Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza building, the Gothic Seville Cathedral and the Giralda.
 
Penn State is set to kayak in Lagos, which holds famous scenic caves and beautiful blue waters. Later in the day, the team will visit Projecto Mudaki Almancil and interact with kids interested in lacrosse.
 
The final day of the trip will hold a zipline from Spain to Portugal, the only cross border zipline in the world. The trip will conclude with a group going away dinner to recount and reminisce on the trip.
