No. 4/5 Men's Lacrosse Falls to No. 14/15 Michigan in Big Ten Semifinals

BALTIMORE, Md. - The fourth-ranked Penn State men's lacrosse team fell to 14th-ranked Michigan 17-15 in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals on Thursday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Nittany Lions scored two goals to open the game as Jack and Matt Traynor each scored to give Penn State a 2-0 lead with 10:53 remaining in the opening quarter.
  • Michigan then countered with a pair of goals to tie the game up at 2-2 with 8:14 left in the quarter.
  • Both sides each added two goals apiece the close out the opening quarter with the game tied up at 5-5.
  • Kevin Winkoff opened the second quarter with a goal coming with 13:34 remaining in the quarter to give Penn State a 6-5 lead.
  • After a Michigan goal evened the game again at 6-6, Penn State tacked on two goals by Matt Traynor and Ethan Long to put Penn State ahead 8-6 with 8:06 remaining in the half.
  • Both sides went back-and-forth on a pair of goals each to send the game into halftime with the Nittany Lions ahead 10-8.
  • The second half started all in favor of Michigan as the Wolverines tallied five unanswered goals to take a 13-10 lead with 6:40 remaining in the third quarter.
  • Jack Traynor scored the lone goal in the third quarter with 1:32 remaining to narrow the Michigan lead to 13-11.
  • Michigan then went on a 3-0 scoring run to give them a commanding 16-11 lead with 10:18 remaining in the fourth quarter.
  • Penn State fired back with three unanswered goals coming off the sticks of Grant Haus, TJ Malone and Jake Morin and tighten the Michigan lead to 16-14.
  • Michigan and Penn State each tallied one more goal in the game to close with Michigan taking the victory 17-15.

GOALTENDING

  • Goalie Jack Fracyon tallied 17 saves and allowed 16 goals on the day to drop his record to 9-4 on the year.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Jack Traynor registered his 100th career point with his first goal of the game.
  • Jake Morin tallied his first career hat-trick.
  • Four Nittany Lions scored multiple goals.
  • Michigan dominated the face-off circle winning 23 over Penn State's 12.
