FUKUOKA, Japan – Six current or former Penn State swimmers represented their countries in the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Japan. Eduardo Cisternas (Chile), Emma Harvey (Bermuda), Jack Harvey (Bermuda), Mariano Lazzerini (Chile), Melissa Rodriguez (Mexico) and Shane Ryan (Ireland) all competed in the championships.

Eduardo Cisternas had a strong World Championships debut, posting a time of 3:53.80 in the 400 Freestyle prelims. His time was a personal best and set a Chile national record. Cisternas finished second in his heat and 29th overall out of 55 competitors.
Cisternas recorded a time of 8:18.06 in his 800 Freestyle prelim. The Chile native finished sixth in his heat and 35th overall in the event.
Mariano Lazzerini won his heat in the 100 Breaststroke prelims, sprinting to a 1:01.97. He placed 36th overall, out of 70, in the event.
Lazzerini, representing Chile, posted his second heat victory of the week. In the 50 Breaststroke, Lazzerini secured a time of 28.44 to place first in his heat and 33rd overall.
Emma Harvey recorded a time of 1:03.14 in the 100 Backstroke. The Bermuda native placed eighth in her heat and 39th overall in the event.
Harvey earned a time of 28.79 in the 50 Backstroke. She finished third in her heat and 31st overall.
Jack Harvey also competed in the 100 Backstroke, racing to a 57.04 to finish fourth in his heat. Jack placed 42nd overall in the 100 Backstroke.
Harvey collected a time of 2:04.52 in the 200 Backstroke. The Bermuda native placed fourth in his heat and 32nd overall.
In the 4x100 mixed freestyle relay, Emma and Jack Harvey helped Bermuda to set a national record with a 3:38.86. The Bermuda team finished second in its relay heat and 24th out of 44 teams.
In her first of three events at the World Championships, Melissa Rodriguez notched a time of 1:09.16 in the 100 Breaststroke prelims. Rodriguez placed third in her heat and 33rd overall in the event.
Rodriguez touched the wall in 2:30.57 in the 200 Breaststroke. She placed eighth in her heat and 25th overall in the event.
Rodriguez notched a 32.05 pace in the 50 Breaststroke. The Mexico representative finished sixth in her heat and 34th out of 55 competitors.
Shane Ryan competed in his first event of the World Championships on July 25, registering a 49.04 in the 100 Freestyle. He placed second in his heat and 33rd overall out of 116 competitors.
Ryan helped Ireland to a heat win in the 4x100 Medley Relay. Ryan posted a 48.59 split, while swimming freestyle, to help the squad to a 3:35.03 and a 13th-place finish overall.
